The marathon

To say this week has been hard is an understatement. Instead of Davy getting progressively better each day, I would say she got progressively worse. By Friday we only had one dose left of Davy's Tylenol with codeine and I started stressing. So I called Dr. J and told him what was going on. He advised me to try using ibuprofen with regular Tylenol first and if it wasn't enough then to call him. He also told me that he was not surprised by her still being in a lot of pain, because her surgery was not your average clefty repair. Poor Davy, she was just miserable. There were only two things we could do to distract her. One was taking her for a walk. I have walked her all over town....twice. And when I couldn't walk anymore, Scott did. Then we walked together, until finally Davy decided she no longer was distracted. It felt like I walked a marathon on saturday.

The other thing that would distract Davy was, funny enough, Yo gabba. We could get a good ten minutes of no crying from it. And when your baby is crying all day ten minutes is a gift. I told Scott that he needed to pat himself on the back for a job well done. Then I sent a message to Lance telling him he was an angel straight from heaven for making Davy happy today.
Tomorrow morning we are going back to Choc to have Davy's sutures removed. It's pretty much a mini surgery. So tonight we start the process all over again. No milk past 2am, wake up at 5am, fill out paper work, watch the nurses try to put an Iv in and have her be put under anesthesia. But this time I think I will be able to sleep in the waiting room, cuz man.........I'm exhausted.

I don't understand how I can feel such love for a child over the internet. I think it is because she looks like my Cora (7.5 months). You guys are doing great and I'll keep praying for you.

You have such an incredibly tough job right now. I hope this week is easier on all of you and you can see a light at the end of the tunnel.

Maybe Lance can do an in-person for dear Davy's viewing pleasure :)

She is looking terrific! I'm so sorry she's feeling bad. I can't imagine. xoxo! My girl had to go back in for stitched removal and it was so frustrating b/c it wasn't a real surgery but we had to act like it was. ugh...

Oh, and why are they not putting the IV's in after she's out ALL the time. I saw you post about this before and it's really bothering me. The 3 times we have gone in they have always done it after they gassed my daughter. So much less upsetting for everyone. Can you ask them to do it that way? I hope that it will go smoothly and she'll start feeling better soon!

I can't imagine how hard this is for you all. I hope that she heals quickly, for her sake and yours. How are your boys handling it? Are they staying with someone else for a little while? You and your husband are so amazing, you are doing a wonderful job.

I haven't commented before, but figured I better start because I always love your posts, and always want to comment!
I'm from Canada and have been reading your blog for a few months. I love the way your write, and your creativity in EVERYTHING you do is amazing: your photos, your style, and Davy's clothes - to name a few. Anyways, I'm so sorry that Davy is in so much pain. I hope it heals quickly and that the pain subsides.

Notes: No-nos were a nightmare. I h.a.t.e. them. We were only able to keep them on by watching him like a hawk and I have a very tattle tale-y two year old. MOM! BABY ERICK IS TAKING OFF HIS BANDAIDS!!!!

The nasal formers were sutured in place for two weeks. Nasal formers = no-nos. Our doc sutures them in place for two weeks and then takes them out. I know a lot of docs have you take them in and out for up to six weeks. Um, no thanks.

Post op he was on antibiotics in the hosp, three doses of decadron, two doses of IV morphine. Then started tylenol with codeine orally. I gave it every four hours routinely for 3 days, then every six for two days, then every 8 for a day and then every twelve for about three days. He was on oral keflex for five days and otoflaxacin ear drops for three days. He had tubes put in at the same time. And he has an obturator that was modified from the nam piece. It functions like a retainer. It's held in place with denture adhesive. Syringe fed for two weeks and moved to the pigeon yesterday.

That's my cleft repair in a nutshell. I'm sorry Davy's not feelin' it. The first week and a half are the hardest. By about day 12-13 it's like you start to get your baby back.

If you have any other questions just lmk. You can leave a comment with an e-mail on my blog if you're comfortable with that. It won't get published. :) Then it wont look like I'm writing a novel in your comments. :)

Sorry she's having a rough time with the pain. You are such great parents to be attentive to relieve her frustration, even if it can only be for 10 minutes at a time. Hopefully the light will appear at the end of your tunnel soon!

I so admire your strength and courage! Seriously, you're so inspiring.

I'm glad Davy is doing better, but I have to say, that first picture of her crying just breaks my heart. She looks so sad. :(

I just read your post from yesterday, and I'm so glad getting her stitches out wasn't a huge ordeal for you guys, especially little Davy.

Oh, what a sweet little angel, I can't believe how much she reminds me of my little cleft angel! Does she have a g-tube? It looked like the tubing of it in her picture. My little girl has one. Good Luck, the first few weeks is the hardest, (besides all of the worry before surgery.) Hang in there, all of you!
