first foods

We have started solids! You will never guess what we fed Davy first. Rice cereal......nope. Bananas......nuh-uh. Pudding and lollipops? Ding ding ding, you guessed it. Now before you call child's services on me or think I am completely koo koo, It 's all a part of Brittany's(Davy's OT) master plan to get this girl eating.
It was our third session when Brit pulled out the dumdums and snack packs and I have to say it was a little unexpected. But hasn't everything with Davy been unexpected?
First up, the lollipop. This was because Davy obviously has issues with her mouth(oral aversion) and Brit wanted to awaken her senses,in a positive way and see if her mouth would do the appropriate things.

This was the first taste. Just a couple of taps on the tongue.

Now we put it on both sides of her mouth, then take it out and see if she swallows her saliva. I do believe there was a little smile on Miss Davy's face. So far so good. Now it's pudding time! Brit puts down the lollipop opens the snack pack...wait what's this?

I have NEVER seen Davy move that fast. In fact I have never seen her pick up something this small! She is definitely my daughter. Ask anyone about my love for sugar, it's a problem.

We eventually did move onto the pudding. The reason for the pudding was the texture. Thicker textures are actually easier to swallow. We just dabbed a couple of drops on her tongue and watched her go. It was all really positive. The best part about this is she wants to eat by mouth. So now she just needs to learn how to do it safely. Next up, Bananas!

Found you through CJane and have been following for a while. Your Davy is precious and oh so beautiful!
I have a seven month old (#5) and I read with admiration how you handle your unique trials with your angel girl.
Happy happy for a positive first experience! I couldn't not comment after seeing the second picture-her hint of a smile and her beautiful little hands!

We did the same thing with my daughters OT. Once she mastered the dum dum, they told me to move on to stale licorice (Parental supervision, of course.). Once her tongue started swirling it was on to long cheesy Cheetos. I was so horrified with the bad diet that I bought the healthy version of them. But who are we kidding here? They are Cheetos! The positive side was that they were big enough for my daughter to pick up, guide to her mouth and basically have them melt in her mouth. She has a severely under-developed muscle tone, so it really was miraculous watching her stuff herself with cheesy goodness.
The funny thing was, my mom watched my daughter one day and said, "oh, by the way, I threw out all that stale licorice you had in the pantry!" Me. Head down to myself, "Oh mom."
Davy looks adorable nursin that dum dum. Good luck!

Yay Davy! :)

I don't know if you're comfortable with sharing the ins and outs, but I have been wondering what your amazing surgeon did to the inside of that cute mouth. I mean, the real point of all the work, while her smile and nose are adorable (were before, too), is the function, and this post in particular made me wonder again how the roof of her mouth, etc are now.

I too came here through CJane. In the midst of all the rushing to get two girls off to school, in the middle of the chaos of a house just moved in to, this step for Davy really put a bright spot in my morning!

My favorite pic of my baby girl is her eating licorice as part of her therapy! She had big time oral adversion, but who could resist such yummy treats? Good Job, Davy!

Congratulations! It's so exciting. I hope that will be my daughter soon.

You should check out this website I recently found http://childrenandbabiesnoteating.com/index.html . It has a ton of information on kids who don't eat, feeding tubes, treatment options, etc. Made me feel less alone in all this, plus a lot of good info.
